A Big Fantasy Move...

This is the time of the year when fantasy football is all the rage and certainly at HS8T HQ, we share in the excitement of football season and having control over my team and its fate.

While looking for some information for this week's draft, we ran across this little ditty. You can read the details, but all I needed to see was...Jerry West is available. Yep, the same guy who got Kobe, who put together the first Laker dynasty of the 90s, and who even built the Grizzlies from nothing to mediocrity before stepping aside. Simply put, it's like I always say in fantasy - you always upgrade. If you have Ben Roethlisberger and you have the chance to get Drew Brees, you go get Drew Brees. (Fantasy speaking right now)...

So, in this sense, if you have Rick Sund - no matter how much you like him and Jerry West is available. You go and find out if you can get him. Now, reality says - this isn't going to happen, but that's why we call it a fantasy move.

I don't think it would make much of a difference if you believe that the ASG will only handicap what improvement West would bring.

Jerry West may have a golden past as a GM (which is a mite overrated since it is public that he preferred Sidney Moncrief to Magic Johnson and it was Buss who overrode his choice) but his latest achievement was to handover Pau Gasol to his beloved Lakers in exchange for a lot less than he would have gotten from other franchises.

So, in my book, I fear that if he ever became our GM I think he would trade Horford for Shannon Brown, Derek Fisher's old carcass (still valuable) and DJ Mbenga...

Hello...been a minute since I've posted something on the site, but here it goes...

@valter - I wouldn't say that Jerry West's achievements are overrated since there are mistakes made by every GM. That said, I think you are cherry picking mightily to forget that he was the orchestrator of the Shaq/Kobe three-peat (as in signed Shaq, got D. Fish, selected Kobe, etc) and yes, you can talk about handing over Pau Gasol, but that was a move made by ownership and at the end of the day - if you look at what actually happened as a result for the Grizzlies - it was not a fleecing. He got 2 players and 2 first round picks that replenished talent that the owner asked him to do.

So, I don't share your feel that he'd trade anyone unless of course (and this is entirely possible) the ASG asked him to do so. If so, sure - he could make that trade, but I think I'd spend my time worried about our ownership and not Jerry making haphazard trades of his own choosing.
